Google has since elaborated that Beta is just what they call product that are not yet complete, even though they may be released to the public, I suppose they just do not want others to deal with the version numbers.

I am currently testing the Google Chrome browser and I like it so far, though I sorely miss NoScript, AdBlock and other such useful addons from FireFox, so I still use FireFox also. :)

I much prefer Opera for the time being, but some bugs with page-caching are starting to become a nuisance.
